Viewing Album:  Kanonenbahn tourist railroad in Germany

Album Info:As part of a group tour, we rode the Kanonenbahn out of Lengenfeld, Thuringen, Germany. Kanonenbahn translates as "Cannon Railroad" - used during World War 1 to transport strategic military munitions and troops across Germany. It's an East-West railroad built to military specifrications with respect to curvature and gradient. Two tracks were specified to facilitate expedited traffic flow It ran east-west across Germany from Alsace-Lorraine To Berlin. As an east-west line, it featured a lot of uphill and downhill sections crossing the hills between river valleys, which generally flow north-south in Germany. A Portion of the old line has been converted to a tourist operation - Erlebnis-Draisine, which roughly translates to "Adventure Rail Bike". Visitors can elect to pedal railbikes along the route, or ride in the electrically powered Kanonenbahn, a converted track inspection/maintenance vehicle.

Description:  Pedal Rail Bikes is the other way to experience the Kanonenbahn. It would require a significant muscular effort to haul these heavy vehicles up the 1.1% average grade eastbound. The downhill ride back to Lengenfeld would certainly be faster.. "Erlebnis Raisine" translates roughly to "Adventure Rail Pedal Car".
