Jupiter starts its runby for park visitors |
Description: |
That's wood smoke coming from the funnel stack. The Central Pacific ordered wood burning locomotives for their portion of the transcontinental railroad because California didn't have any coal mines. Jupiter was built in Schenectady, NY and shipped around the Horn of South American and back uo the Pacific coast to San Francisco. Ditto for the rail that the Central Pacific used in constructing the Sacremento - to - Promontory Summit. It came to California by steamship through Magellan's Strait. |
