MWCR 9, Waumbek
Title:  MWCR 9, Waumbek
Description:  The Cog advertises that the 9:00 a.m. departure will be powered by an historic steam locomotive. On July 23, MWCR #9, Waumbek, drew the duty. Here it is after the run, being kept hot in case an extra section needed to be run in the afternoon. Otherwise, most of the trains nowadays are being powered by the new biodiesel interlopers.

MWCR 9 - Waumbek shoving upgrade on Jacobs Ladder trestle
Title:  MWCR 9 - Waumbek shoving upgrade on Jacobs Ladder trestle
Description:  This was the money shot of the day, and the one that I hiked three and a half hours in to get. The steepest part of the Mt Washington Cog Railway (37.4% gradient), and arguably the most photogenic spot along the cog railway's route.

On the way up to me
Title:  On the way up to me
Description:  I reached my intended photo location on the knoll overlooking the Jacobs Ladder trestle as the steam train started up the mountain from the base station. In this shot you can see the steam train getting closer, the Waumbek water tank, and two diesel powered trains down at the base station in the upper left corner of the photo. The Red diesel - M3 Abenaki is boarding passengers, and the White Diesel (with purple passenger car) has already started up the hill behind the steam train.

Title:  Left-side profile of MWCR 9 - Waumbec at the station before the day's ascent
Description:  That horizontal cylinder above the front drive wheel is a feedwater heater, which takes the water from the tender's axle pump and pre-heats it with exhaust before it is injected into the boiler.

MWCR 9 descending Mt Washington
Title:  MWCR 9 descending Mt Washington
Description:  The engineer saw me taking photos up on the hillside and recognized me from the day before. He gave a friendly toot on the whistle - also a photogenic bonus steam plume for a "down" train. That's Mount Clay in the upper right of the photo. I had climbed up that long ridgeline up to Mt Clay earlier in the morning to gain my hoped-for photo spot at Jacobs Ladder
